We’d like to dedicate this entry to our beloved stockist – Becks, from So Beau Baby!
Whether you’ve stumbled across her store once, or are a regular customer of hers, you’ve probably been mesmerised by the beauty of her shops’ display. We were lucky enough to have a mini interview with her, and are delighted to share with you what she has to say!
How did the name ‘So Beau Baby’ come about? Is there a special meaning behind it?
It may sound cliché, but ‘Beau’ is my son’s name. With the meaning of Beau being beautiful, it felt obvious that we needed to incorporate it into the name of our business. We also wanted something punchy that would stand out from the crowd, and that’s basically how ‘So Beau Baby’ was born – something I feel rather proud of!
What inspired you to start a business in kids’ fashion?
When we moved to New Zealand four years ago (my husband, Luke, is a returning Kiwi), we knew it was the right opportunity for us to make the changes we wanted in our lives; changing our career path and starting our own business was at the top of our to-do list. I’ll be honest, we initially had no idea what kind of business we wanted to run; we just knew we wanted to start “something” – something we both had a genuine passion for. I’ve always been a lover of fashion, and with Beau being my main focus at the time, I thought, “well, why not combine the two things I love?” Our business began to take shape after noticing a lack of quality kids’ boutique brands in the market, especially here in NZ. The merging of Luke’s passion for business, with my love for fashion and children, worked perfectly in molding SBB into what it is today!
What do you think makes SBB different to other children’s clothing stores?
Not to say other business owners don’t, but we work really hard. In fact, we live and breathe SBB 24/7 and its all-consuming! We spend a great deal of time researching what’s ‘hot’ and ‘upcoming’ in the world of children’s fashion, whether that requires spending hours trawling through Instagram or visiting trade shows in Europe. We pride ourselves in supporting independent brands from around the world, whose focus is on quality, and bringing back to our customers some of the best products available in the market; we are currently the only bricks and mortar store in the country to be carrying such a diverse range. Supporting homegrown talent is another area in which we place priority in – a reason why we’re working closely with an array of amazing brands and designers here in NZ.
Understanding our customers and building solid relationships with them is without a doubt a key factor that keeps SBB going strong till this day. After all, if it weren’t for our customers and their loyalty, we wouldn’t be waking up to what we love doing every day! We also place value in giving back to our customers by keeping them excited with what’s new and fresh in store each season!
You have two beautiful stores! How would you characterise the two?
Our Devonport store (which was the first to open) is part of a beautiful old building that’s full of character, and designed with exposed brickwork, high paneled ceilings, and a tiled entrance – features that give it an intimate boutique feel in both size and style. Our new Orakei Bay Village store is much larger and located inside a converted Whisky distillery. We had a lot more confidence opening up this second store, and I believe this confidence reflected well in the way we styled it – industrial-feel with concrete floors, wooden display units, and copper rails. Although we’ve tied in certain elements that connect the two stores, they are quite different in terms of style. That being said, we’re planning on doing an entire makeover of our Devonport store – something we’re very excited about!
Was there anything you’d like to say to your customers and our Hux Readers?
To our customers, just a million THANK YOUs for your continued support and loyalty. I know I’ve said this many times, but I truly think we have the best and most cutest customers! Without them, we wouldn’t be doing what we’re doing now (as stressful as it can be, at times).
And, to your readers: I’d say, keep supporting independents, like Huxbaby! It’s bloody hard work running and growing a business that’s sustainable, especially in the world of retail. Oh, and keep on rocking the style stakes – don’t listen to those who say, “there’s no point in spending that extra bit on quality kids’ clothing and brands, as they’ll grow out of them eventually,” – because, when your kids start forming their own opinions in terms of what to wear, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Frozen outfits will raise their heads, and before you know it, they’ll be teenagers with extremely questionable sense of style. Trust me, you’ll look back at their early years and think, “at least they looked chic when I dressed them.”
